C. S. Lewis, in his book “Reflections on the Psalms” wondered why God would command us to worship Him. It sounded arrogant and vain.
Then he noticed something: praise is the natural response to something we enjoy. He says, quote,
‘I had never noticed that all enjoyment spontaneously overflows into praise…The world rings with praise – lovers praising their mistresses, readers their favourite poet, walkers praising the countryside, players praising their favourite game – praise of weather, wines, dishes, actors, motors, horses, college, countries, historical personages, children, flowers…The Psalmists in telling everyone to praise God are doing what all men do when they speak of what they care about.’
We are made in such a way that we naturally praise those things that we enjoy and invite others to enjoy them with us. The more we grow to understand God and who He is – the more we grow in intimacy with God – the more we will naturally want to praise Him.
Worship is not some difficult command God has placed upon us because He is vain. It is simply the natural response to encountering the greatest joy, the greatest Being, the greatest Love in and beyond the universe.
Don't hold back. Let it out! God is here! He is supreme in all things! Let the praise out! It's time to worship!
