The Wonder of the Word
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. John 1:1
The Bible is so common place in most Christian homes that we have lost our reverence for it. I own multiple copies and various translations. I have an app for it on my phone. I read it daily. But do I really appreciate the wonder of the Word of God.
When we hear or read God's Word we are encountering God Himself.
Read that sentence again and let it settle in. God meets us in His Word.
The Power of the Word
God's Word is inseparable from God Himself:
- The Word performs divine acts
By the word of the Lord the heavens were made ... Psalm 33:6
... the word that I have spoken will judge him on the last day. John 12:48
... receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls. James 1:21
- The Word has divine attributes
Forever, O Lord, your word is firmly fixed in the heavens. Psalm 119:89
so shall my word be that goes out from my mouth;
it shall not return to me empty,
but it shall accomplish that which I purpose,
and shall succeed in the thing for which I sent it. Isaiah 55:11
The law of the Lord is perfect, reviving the soul; Psalm 19:7
- The Word is a proper object of praise
In God, whose word I praise, in the Lord, whose word I praise ... Psalm 56:10
- The Word is Jesus
And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth. John 1:14
Encounter God in the Word
Next time you read the Bible or hear the Bible being read, remember you are encountering God. Take it seriously. Receive it with reverence.
