Worship in Truth

Last month we looked at John 4:23 and talked about what it means to Worship in Spirit.  In this post we will take one more look at the passage and discuss what it means to worship in truth.

The true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship him.  John 4:23

God is seeking a certain type of worshiper: those who worship in spirit and truth.  If I want to be someone God seeks, than I need to learn what it means to worship in spirit and truth.

In the previous post, we learned that Worship in the Spirit is internal and Spirit lead.  My spirit communing with God’s Spirit.  So what does this passage say about worship in truth?

Just one verse earlier Jesus gives us a hint when He says to the woman at the well,

You worship what you do not know; we worship what we know, for salvation is from the Jews. John 4:22

Worship in the truth is worship that is based on knowledge of the truth.  With that in mind, here are my thoughts concerning worship in the truth:

  • True in Beliefs.  Our worship needs to be based upon the truth of God’s Word.  God seeks people who have a proper understanding of who He is and what He has done for us.  This appears to be the primary thought behind Jesus’ words.
  • True in Heart.  Our worship needs to come from sincere hearts.  God is seeking people who have hearts that seek Him.
  • True in Actions.  Our worship needs to be reflected in the integrity of our actions.  God seeks people who live a life of worship, not just say the right words.
  • Founded on The Truth.  Our worship needs to be focused upon Jesus, who is the Truth.  God seeks people who will come to Him through Christ.

Question:  What do you think it means to worship in truth?  What did I miss?  Please comment.

  1. Just one quick comment here. Because Jesus IS the Truth, we can worship Him in truth because we have the very mind of Christ. His presence indwells believers and because His blood covers us, we CAN worship Him in truth– HIS truth.
