The word “bless” is used in the bible primarily to refer to three things: 1) being happy, 2) to praise someone, or 3) to reward or wish good for someone.
Just like with any other word, the context is important. Frequently the word “bless” means “to be happy”. So, when the psalms say someone is “blessed”, you can also interpret that as saying someone is happy.
When it is used as a verb it often has the meaning of “to praise someone”. This is the meaning of the phrase to “bless the Lord” – we praise the Lord.
Finally it may be used to indicate that someone is rewarding or wishing good upon someone else. This is the case when God is the one doing the action – He rewards us with something good.
